The opportunity

Our client is a growing automotive retail group whose business spans used-car sales, in-house financing and collections, vehicle reconditioning, and service. The workforce includes commissioned sales teams, technicians, collections and customer service staff, and corporate specialists. Each has different hiring, onboarding, and management needs. You will build an HR function that supports those differences while giving every location consistent, dependable service.

The challenge is making that work across locations and states. Managers need timely answers, employees need a clear point of contact, and leaders need reporting they can act on. You will build a dependable operating foundation while earning employees’ trust and helping managers lead well. That foundation supports a more consistent employee experience as the business grows.

Reporting to the CFO and working closely with the VP and President, you will connect growth plans to workforce strategy. You will lead the HR Manager and a team of Talent Acquisition Specialists, assess team capacity, and shape the function within a budget set by the CFO.

What you will lead

  • Partner with executive leadership on organizational design, leadership effectiveness, workforce planning, and the people decisions required to support continued growth.
  • Build responsive HR support across locations: listen to employee concerns, resolve questions with care and follow-through, and give people a dependable point of contact when HR is not on site.
  • Strengthen employee relations, timekeeping support, workers’ compensation, and separations across sites. Make effective use of HR and recruiting systems and anticipate recurring operational problems.
  • Own HR policies and multi-state employment compliance, and lead employee relations investigations with sound judgment, consistency, and discretion.
  • Build HR reporting that helps leaders act: time to hire, cost per hire, offer acceptance rate, quality of hire, onboarding efficiency, and retention and turnover. Develop a regular view of HR spending.
  • Coach managers across sales, service, collections, and corporate teams on communication, performance, and supporting employees. Turn cultural priorities into consistent day-to-day leadership practices.
  • Rebuild onboarding and orientation across locations and departments so employees understand the business, feel connected to the organization, and receive the support to succeed in their roles.
  • Guide recruiting and partner with an outside search firm on specialized and leadership hiring, giving senior leaders a clear internal partner for those searches.

Why this role

Whether you already lead HR across multiple locations or are ready to move from regional leadership into ownership of the full function, this is an opportunity to shape how HR supports a growing business. You will work directly with executive leadership, develop the team and operating model, and apply your experience managing the complexity of a distributed workforce. Automotive experience is not required; what matters is how you have built, led, and supported people across locations through growth.

The experience you bring

  • HR leadership across multiple physical locations, with evidence that you have built or adapted processes as the business added sites. Experience across states is valuable.
  • Experience supporting an in-person, hourly and commissioned workforce and managers whose needs cannot all be handled from one office.
  • A record of building practical HR processes, improving reporting, and using HR and recruiting systems to support decisions and prevent recurring problems.
  • Experience coaching managers and leading organizational or cultural change through them, with examples of how you earned trust and improved employees’ experience.
  • Operational discipline paired with care for people: you follow through, respond reliably, and earn support for change rather than imposing process without listening.
  • The ability to work on site in Phoenix, with minimal travel as business needs require. Candidates willing to relocate to Phoenix are welcome.

You may be a regional HR leader in automotive retail ready to take ownership of the full function, or an HR leader from another multi-unit business who has built the operating foundation through growth. Automotive experience is a plus, not a requirement. We are interested in what you have built and how it worked across sites, beyond the title you hold today.

What success looks like

In the first 90 days, you will align with executive and operational leaders on priorities, evaluate the HR team’s capacity, and recalibrate its structure around business needs. You will establish clear ownership and a practical plan for reporting and responsive HR support across locations.

Over the first 6 to 12 months, success means more consistent HR support across sites, a more unified leadership team, improved onboarding and orientation, and reporting that guides hiring and retention decisions. You will create ways for employees to share feedback, encourage participation, and act on what you learn to improve their experience.

Compensation and scope

$130,000 to $140,000 base salary plus a performance bonus. Bonus measures and structure will be discussed during the process.

Payroll remains with Accounting. The CFO initially retains benefits negotiation and 401(k) audits; any future transfer of those responsibilities will be discussed separately.
